Whatever you are planning to develop in the built environment – be it a residential neighbourhood or condominium, a commercial tower or retail plaza, a school or hospital, a hotel or sports & entertainment complex – chances are some type of noise and vibration assessment will be mandated by your provincial/state or local regulatory authority at one or more stages of your project, as part of a permitting and compliance process.
Noise and Vibration Impact Studies and Environmental Noise and Vibration Assessments can be required at the onset, during the land use planning phase. Some municipal bylaws like those in Toronto require that a Construction Vibration Monitoring and Assessment be conducted in support of an application for a building or foundation permit. Sound Transmission Class (STC) and Impact Insulation Class (IIC) Testing in accordance with ASTM or ISO standards can be mandated to verify compliance of constructions with design targets or regulatory guidelines. Furthermore, developers planning to build a new residential project in the Province of Ontario must comply with the design and site review requirements of Tarion Builder Bulletin 19R, as part of Ontario’s New Home Warranties Plan Act.
