Barry’s Bootcamp was founded in Hollywood in 1998 by LA-based celebrity fitness trainer Barry Jay who created an all-in-one 60-minute cardio and strength training workout. Today Barry’s Bootcamp has 50 worldwide locations. Every planned Barry’s Bootcamp undergoes a thorough acoustical design to substantially mitigate noise and vibration escaping the Studio.

The company reached out to HGC Engineering to help them with the acoustical aspects of their lease agreements and the designs of their first two Canadian branches in Toronto: One studio, opening in the Picasso on Richmond condominium, (for which HGC Engineering was already providing acoustical consulting for) and a second Toronto location in a commercial podium of a luxury condo at 100 Bloor Street West, facing Yorkville park.

Both fitness studios were designed and constructed as rooms-within-rooms with isolated floor, wall, and ceiling assemblies. All interior surfaces of the studio were decoupled acoustically from the surrounding building and tenants to reduce noise transmission from music and fitness activities through to common structural elements. By providing additional mass and an airspace, these interior assemblies greatly reduced the possibility of noise traveling beyond the fitness studios. The isolated floating floors also served to reduce vibration transmission to the rest of the buildings from rhythmic workouts, treadmill running, spinning and dropped hand weights. Because of our successful efforts in Toronto, we were asked to assist them with their new Vancouver studio opening in the Oceanic Plaza office building.

The new studio is located directly adjacent to a conference centre in the building which has created some acoustical challenges. HGC Engineering has been developing a strong reputation for effective fitness studio acoustical design. Our clients in this niche also include Goodlife Fitness and Orange Theory.
