Gerdau Steel Mill and Scrap Recycling Facility

Steel Mill Noise Measurement and Control

Location: Selkirk, Manitoba
Owner/Operator: Gerdau Longsteel North America

Gerdau Longsteel North America is one of the largest mini-mill steel producers in North America, with annual manufacturing capacity of approximately 10 million metric tons of mill finished steel products.  Through its vertically integrated network of mini-mills, scrap recycling facilities and downstream operations, the company serves customers throughout the U.S. and Canada, and exports many of its products throughout the world. Gerdau owns and operates Manitoba Rolling Mills (“MRM”), and Manitoba Metallics – a steel recycling facility – in Selkirk, north of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

HGC Engineering has been working with Gerdau at the Selkirk facility for more than ten years, and has prepared environmental noise assessments to support renewals of the Provincial environmental licenses for the site, conducted workplace noise surveys for hearing conservation, and assisted with the long term noise management strategies for the two facilities.  Among other recycling processes, Manitoba Metallics uses a large hammer mill to shred automobiles and other large metal appliances; HGC Engineering has assisted in maintaining a long term, automated off-site noise monitoring system for the “shredder.”
