The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) is an academic institute that offers more than 110 career programs in technology, trades and business. Established in 1916, it is Calgary’s second oldest post-secondary institution and Canada’s first publicly funded polytechnic school.
Acoustical Consultants to Design-build Team
HGC is part of the design-build team that was awarded the contract for the Taylor Family Campus Centre Redevelopment project at SAIT. The Institute is undertaking this multi-year project to reimagine a new Centre of student life on campus. The scope of the $169M project includes the construction of renewed facilities dedicated to student-focused spaces supporting health and well-being, campus athletics and recreation, as well as campus life and learning.

The Taylor Family Campus Centre will feature:

A Welcome Centre

Spaces for study, gathering and collaboration

An athletics and recreation centre with a 5000-seat hockey and event arena, triple gymnasium, fitness and weights area, sports medicine clinic and a recreational walking track

Health and wellness areas

A 700-person capacity convention centre

A campus pub/restaurant
The 270,000 square feet Centre will prioritize sustainable and universally accessible design. SAIT is targeting sustainability design certifications including CAGBC Zero Carbon Building Design Certification, LEED Gold, and Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification (RHFAC).
The exterior was inspired by SAIT’s logo and the overall design embraces Indigenous knowledge and practices, incorporating communal spaces and culturally relevant elements as part of SAIT’s commitment to reconciliation.
HGC’s role on the project is providing comprehensive acoustical consulting services as well as construction vibration monitoring
The new Campus Centre is slated to open in late 2027
Acoustical consulting services being delivered include:
- Construction Vibration Monitoring
- Sound Transmission Class (STC) Analysis
- Room Acoustics of Welcome Centre, Hockey Arena, Gymnasium, Fitness Centre, Classrooms, Meeting Rooms, Lobby, Restaurant/Pub etc.
- Building Services Noise and Vibration control (HVAC Systems, Pumps, Generators, etc.)
- Acoustical Privacy Between Offices, Meeting Rooms, Clinic Rooms etc.
- Noise and Vibration Control of Amenity Spaces (Fitness Centre, Hockey Arena, Convention Centre, Restaurant/Pub etc.)
- Façade and Glazing Specification
- Shop Drawing Review
- Site Inspections
