Designing Quiet, Family‑Friendly Living: Acoustical Consulting for Toronto’s Reina Condominiums
HGC provided comprehensive acoustical consulting support for this family-friendly, midrise condominium created by Canada’s first all-female‑ development team. Built on the former site of the infamous House of Lancaster Gentlemen’s Strip Club, the project was conceived to raise awareness of gender inequality and highlight the roles women can play across the building industry. From construction management to engineering, architecture, and urban planning, the entire leadership team behind Reina is composed of women. To that point, HGC’s own Jessica Tinainov was the acoustical team lead on the project.
The distinction of being Canada’s first all-female‑ development team has earned the project international attention, including coverage in The New York Times and Oprah Magazine.
Reina is a 9-storey condominium featuring 197 residential suites and a wide range of family-friendly amenities: a gym, yoga studio, kids’ playroom, hobby & games room, library, pet wash, and stroller parking on every floor. The gym and yoga studio include windows overlooking the kids’ zone so parents can keep an eye on their children while working out.
The developers also collaborated with the Girl Guides, holding a workshop for young girls to envision their ideal teen amenity space. One idea that became reality is the Snack Shack, a 24/7 lounge outfitted with vending machines and essential hangout features. Another notable amenity is the “Sound(less) Room,” a soundproof space designed for any noise-related activities—from kids’ music lessons to late‑night jam sessions or karaoke.
