Ontario Highway 407 Express Toll Route

Ontario Highway 407 Acoustic Engineers: Road Traffic Noise Control

Location:  Ontario, Canada
Owner/Operator: 407 International Inc.

Highway 407, officially known as the 407 Express Toll Route (ETR), is a privately operated highway and tollway located in the province of Ontario.

The 407 is the first electronically operated toll highway opened in the world; there are no toll booths along the length of the highway. The system uses cameras and transponders to toll vehicles automatically. Transponders or licence plates are read at entrance and exit points and distances calculated electronically.

HGC conducted computer modeling of community noise levels for this innovative private toll highway. Quiet road surfaces were investigated and mitigation was designed for sensitive neighbourhoods using berms and barriers.
