KING Toronto: Acoustical Consulting for a New Landmark Condominium Development in Downtown Toronto
KING Toronto is a transformative, 600,000 sq. ft., city‑block‑scale mixed‑use development redefining Toronto’s King West neighbourhood. Designed by the internationally acclaimed Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the project is distinguished by four “mountains” (towers) that rise in a pixelated form to a height of 16 storeys.
The 440‑unit project draws direct inspiration from Moshe Safdie’s iconic Habitat 67, bringing to life an architectural form composed of stepped, terraced residences wrapped in glass‑brick façades and lush vertical gardens. The result is a visually striking, mountain‑like presence that brings a Mediterranean village sensibility to downtown Toronto.
The development integrates heritage commercial buildings at street level and introduces a central public courtyard plaza, enhancing pedestrian flow and encouraging community gathering. Its innovative design, sustainability focus, and sculptural form have already positioned KING Toronto as a new architectural landmark.
A notable cultural addition to the building’s profile is that Sir Elton John and his husband, David Furnish, have purchased one of KING Toronto’s signature penthouse “Treehouse” suites, where they plan to stay when in Toronto. One of the quieter advantages of owning a penthouse suite in this project is that KING Toronto uses district heating and cooling provided by Enwave’s Deep Lake Water Cooling (DLWC) system. As a result, the tower rooftops are free of typical noise‑ and vibration‑generating rooftop equipment.
HGC has been involved since the project’s inception, providing comprehensive acoustical consulting services throughout design and construction for this highly anticipated and now iconic development.
