John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, Ontario
Location: Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
Owner/Operator: TradePort International Corporation
John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport was first built in October 1940 as a wartime air force training station. After World War II, the Airport transitioned from a military establishment into a public facility. Today Hamilton International has grown to become one of Canada’s largest airports for domestic air-cargo distribution, and a commercial passenger airport for the greater Hamilton area.
Environmental Noise Impact Study of Aircraft Flyovers
HGC was asked to look at the acoustical impact of the Airport in relation to land development nearby that was being considered. The City of Hamilton’s Rural Hamilton Official Plan sets out requirements for development in the vicinity of the airport with regards to the NEF contours. All new development of residential and other sensitive land uses is prohibited in areas of 28 NEF and greater. The Airport Master Plan provides NEF contours for the years 2005, 2015 and 2025 which shows that projected NEF contours will expand until 2015 due to increases in traffic, but would shrink from 2015 to 2025, largely as a result of quieter aircraft. As a result, we recommended that any proposed residential uses on the development lands remain outside the 2025 NEF-30 contour, which is in line with the Provincial policies.
