The Britt Residences

The Britt Residences, Toronto, Ontario

Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Developer: Lanterra Developments
Architects: IBI Group/Page + Steele

At the corner of Bay and Wellesley, the former historic and prestigious city landmark, the Sutton Place Hotel, has almost completed its conversion to a new luxury condo now known as The Britt Residences. When completed, this LEED Silver targeted project will be a 42-storey tower, with a 6-storey podium that will house 729 residential units. The development also includes two 8-storey wings with amenities and 3 levels of underground parking. Amenities will include a dining area, library, party room, exercise room, pool, spa, sauna, board room, yoga and pilates studio, terrace and theatre room.

Interestingly, the original building was stripped down to its bare bones structure which was retained to form the core of the new condo. Despite having the same concrete and steel skeleton structure the new condo shares no aesthetic similarities with its predecessor. It looks like a new building built fresh from the ground up.

HGC Engineering has been the acoustical consultant and noise control expert on the project, and using the hotel’s original concrete and steel structure has proved especially challenging acoustically because the floor slabs we had to work with were only 2 inches thick.
